We are big book lovers here. We love a wide variety of types of books and authors. Our children enter our local reading programs and win----by an embarrassingly large margin. They love to play and are outside quite a bit--and they have a fair amount of chores--but somehow we find large amounts of time to read. And when we aren't reading, there is a good chance that an audio book is playing so we can listen while we work! :)
We are always buying books, too. Books are my first stop at a yard sale. The kids often spend their birthday money on books. We love the deals you can get on Ebay.
Our library system gets books from all over the state. So, almost any book we want to read I can borrow for free through our library. We usually have close to 100 books out at any given time-and sometimes many more than that.
My husband and I go on a date every week. One thing we enjoy doing is going through bookstores. We write down all the new titles that look interesting to us and then we go home and order them through our library's on-line system.
All that to say--I have been thinking about doing a post on books, but have hesitated. The main reason being that everyone has a different opinion of what "good" books are. We have books we approve and disapprove of-just like everyone else. There is no recommended book list that I agree with 100% so I hesitate giving out my recommendations because no one would completely agree with me, either. But my wonderful cousin-in-law and dear friend Amy asked for book recommendations on her blog (Daily Pleasures-It is the best blog on the web! See my side bar for the link.) and I knew I could not keep it to the top five she asked for. So, I am going to list several of our favorites here. I will not list them all---I would be typing for a very long time! ;)
To Cross The Widest Ocean By Becky Martin. She is a missionary's wife. I am rereading this one now.
100+ Ways God Shows Me He Loves Me-available through Christian Womanhood
Letters From A Self-Made Merchant To His Son-This is an old book, but so full of wisdom and practicality, mixed in with some dry humor. My husband read this aloud to me while we were dating.
The Family Nobody Wanted-the delightful true story of a minister's family that could not have children, so they adopted-and adopted-and adopted....
Dorie: The Girl Nobody Loved-In spite amazing odds, this gal went on to serve God joyfully.
The Tightwad Gazette series-I'll never do all these ideas, but this author is inspiring and she is just plain fun to read. There are 3 books.
The Duggars; 20 & Counting-I enjoy this family. They inspire me in so many areas. And my husband LOVES their Tater Tot Casserole!
25 Surprising Marriages-This is in my top ten favorite books of all time. There is much to glean on these pages.
Mistaken Identity-This book contains tragic circumstances handled with God's grace.
Recipes For Rearing Children by the Cowlings
The Essential 55 by Ron Clark-I do not agree with everything he says, but he renews my passion and enthusiaim for teaching. My children benefit every time I read this book. I try to read it at the end of August so I start our school year with fresh vision of my important task.
Danny Orlis series-my children and I are currently devouring these. How refreshing to read books where the characters gladly make godly choices. There are alot of them and they need very little proofing.
The
Bracken Trilogy by Jeri Massi-Almost impossible to put down!
Grandma's Attic series-We have enjoyed these as "read alouds".
When Money Doesn't Grow on Trees by Julie Busby-I gleaned one idea from this book that has saved $40 a month. Yeah!
Tabernacle of the Sun by Dr.Tim Scott-He also wrote
Leviathan. These both contain alot of science and Bible, but written for those of us who don't care to read science. Very exciting to read and I hope this author writes more.
Books by Patricia M. St. John-I loved her books growing up, and now my children love her as well.
The Centurion's Wife by Janette Oke and T. Davis Bunn - I do not own or recommend Oke's Christian romance books anymore, but this book is written from a Biblical and historical stand point. I do not always picture Bible stories in my head like I would like to, but I felt like I was living in Bible times as I read this book.
The New Birth Order Book by Dr. Kevin Leman-I do not think we are bound by our birth order, but it does play a big role in who we become. It opened my eyes to patterns in my home so I could be more consistent with all my children. I recommend it.
Love Adds A little Chocolate-I like this better than the
Chicken Soup For The Soul series.
I love to read about Presidential history. I have listed below just a few of my favorites. These books are fun to read as well as informative:
All the President's ChildrenStanding Next to History by Joseph Petro (Did you ever wonder what the Secret Servive men do?)
White House ChefAir Force One by Kenneth Walsh
I love any books written by:
Mrs. Cindy Schaap
Mrs. Loretta Walker
Mrs. Jane Grafton
Mrs. JoJo Moffitt
Mrs. Frieda Cowling
Alright, that is long enough! This does not even include any of my favorite children's picture books. Remember, I am not offended if you do not agree with all my choices, but I would love to hear what others recommend. I am always on the lookout for more good reading materials...
And. of course, God's Word comes first. I could live without all my other books-but I NEED my Bible. That gets first priority.
Hoping to hear from some of you...
Thanks for stopping by,
